Understanding Precision Mold Manufacturing
Mold manufacturing is the foundation of precision plastic gear production. UNITECH-GEAR brings decades of experience to every mold we build:
Two-Plate Molds: The most basic and economical design, suitable for simple parts with side gating. Three-Plate Molds: Enable pin-point gating for automatic degating, ideal for cosmetic parts. Hot Runner Molds: Eliminate runner waste and reduce cycle times — essential for high-volume production. Multi-Cavity Molds: Produce multiple identical parts per shot, dramatically reducing per-unit cost for volume applications.
Core Components
A precision gear mold consists of the cavity (forming the gear's external shape), core (forming internal features), ejection system, cooling channels, and gating system. Every component must be manufactured to micron-level accuracy for consistent gear quality.
Material Selection
Premium mold steels from Europe (ASSAB, Buderus) and Japan (Daido) provide the hardness (52-58 HRC), wear resistance, and dimensional stability needed for high-volume gear production. UNITECH-GEAR selects steel grades based on expected production volume, material abrasiveness, and part complexity.
Precision Machining
Our facility uses CNC machining centers, Charmilles C-axis EDM for mirror-finish cavities (Ra 0.3), and wire EDM for intricate features. Copper electrodes are designed and manufactured in-house for optimal EDM performance with accuracy to JIS Grade 0.
Quality Standards
Every mold undergoes CMM inspection, mold flow analysis verification, and trial sampling before production release. UNITECH-GEAR molds routinely achieve 500,000+ shot lifetimes with proper maintenance.
