What is their process for corrective and preventive action (CAPA)? Ask for a sample inspection report to understand their documentation quality.

4. Industry Experience

Has the supplier produced gears for your industry or similar applications? A supplier experienced in consumer products may lack the documentation rigor needed for medical devices. A precision mold maker may not understand the nuances of high-volume consistent production. Ask for relevant case studies and references.

5. Communication & Responsiveness

How quickly do they respond to inquiries? Do they ask intelligent questions about your application? Can they communicate technical concepts clearly in your language? Poor communication during the evaluation phase rarely improves after you become a customer.

6. Total Cost Perspective

Look beyond unit price: tooling amortization, minimum order quantities, payment terms, shipping costs, inventory programs, and the cost of potential quality issues. The cheapest unit price often results in the highest total cost when quality, delivery, and service are factored in.
